LIRA/LIF 50% Unlocking Calculator
Estimate how much eligible locked-in pension money you could move to a more flexible retirement account. The 50% option is not available everywhere, and age, account type and application deadlines matter.
Your locked-in funds
Choose the legislation governing your pension funds, not necessarily the province where you live. Ask your pension administrator if unsure.

Confirm whether this election has already been used. For Manitoba, it is once in your lifetime; elsewhere, check the qualifying funds and account history.
Ontario: key rules
Up to 50% of qualifying money transferred to a Schedule 1.1 LIF, using Form 5.2 within 60 days. Generally retirement income starts at 55, but the originating pension plan can allow earlier eligibility. Do not include money already used for a 50% election or assume a LIF-to-LIF transfer creates a new entitlement.
Official rules and application guidanceA zero here only concerns this 50% election. Hardship, small balances, shortened life expectancy, non-residency and other unlocking grounds are not calculated.
Unlocking is not the same as tax-free spending
A properly arranged eligible direct registered transfer generally preserves tax deferral and does not use ordinary RRSP contribution room. Do not withdraw cash first and assume you can redeposit it without consequences. RRSP age limits still apply; after the year you turn 71, an RRIF may be the appropriate destination. Manitoba’s 50% election uses a prescribed RRIF.
Subsequent RRSP/RRIF withdrawals are generally taxable, RRIF minimums still apply, and cash withdrawals can affect OAS recovery tax and income-tested benefits. Unlocking can change creditor protection and spousal rights. Your institution must confirm the qualifying amount, account history, required consent or waivers, and forms before you transfer.
Rules reviewed October 23, 2026. Estimates ignore investment changes, fees and other withdrawals between conversion and election. This is the maximum under the 50% election only, not the maximum under every unlocking provision. Educational information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Read the disclaimer.
